The building at 13 E Martin Street dates to the nineteenth century, but few, if any, remember a time when it wasn’t The Mecca Restaurant. The two story, two bay brick building with plate glass display windows has been home to The Mecca since May 1, 1930 when Nick and Helen Dombalis, Greek immigrants who had recently relocated to Raleigh opened for the first time. Although the $1.00 T-bone steak, side salad, Coke, and ice cream sundae combo option is no longer on the menu, The Mecca continues to thrive as a third place for downtown office workers and residents.
