Built in the early 1890s, the 3,500 square foot building at 10 E Hargett Street has had many uses over the decades—toy store, shoe store, beauty shop, radio sales, sewing shop, alliance company, restaurant, to name a few. However, when Empire Properties purchased the building in 2000, it had been vacant and neglected for years. Empire undertook a complete renovation, restoring original finishes, overhauling the kitchen, and replacing obsolete mechanical and electrical systems. The building has been the home of The Morning Times since 2006. The Morning Times has given the building new life as a quintessential “third place” for downtown Raleigh. The Morning Times serves coffee, breakfast, and lunch and is part of the daily routine for many downtown workers and residents.
